The Zexcoil® Double Single™
The Double Single incorporates a single coil voicing in both Cores, that can be run independently or in combination. Opt for the Fat 55 option in one of the Cores for even more versatility.
The Dr. originally developed the Zexcoil Double Single™ to mimic the higher output bridge single coils that David Gilmour migrated to in the Animals period and after, while also providing the vintage single coil tones from the earlier stuff. The Fat 55 option on Core 1, which substitutes the ZV55 pole piece for the standard Z Series 5. The Double Single approach also works well in the neck position.

Double Single 1 is recommended for the bridge position. Core 1 delivers about 2.2 H, which is a pretty standard vintage output level comparable to the ZVU5 and ZV55. Core 2 yields about 3.7 H which is comparable to a ZMD5 or a Texas Special bridge pickup. Combined in series, the two cores yield an output similar to Gilmour’s high output bridge pickup. Switching between Core 1 and both Cores in series is like a vintage/modern Gilmour switch! The Dr. prefers the Fat 55 option on Core 1, which substitutes the ZV55 pole piece for the standard Z Series 5.
Double Single 2 is a lower output version of the DDS1. Core 1 delivers about 1.9 H and Core 2 delivers about 2.2 H. The series output is similar to a Wide Range humbucker. The Fat 55 option can be used in either core and adds a bit more differentiation to the respective voices.

The Zexcoil Dual Core™ platform is the newest addition to our arsenal of pickups. Dual Core pickups consist of two independent pickups, or “Cores”, side-by-side under a conventionally sized humbucker cover.
Put one of our Z-Core 5 models in the middle of a Double Single Set for what is effectively a super-versatile SSS set in an HSH format.
And don’t forget the 3 position on/off mini toggle switch to access our recommended switching. This may be selected in the drop down box when ordering the pickup(s).

Use a DDS1 in the bridge for a Gilmour-esque bridge response with both the vintage tones of early Floyd, and the thicker, stronger bridge tones of Animals and onward at the flick of a switch. A DDS2 is also an option in the bridge for a lower output flavor. It’s all a matter of taste and preference anyway, so there are no hard rules.

The Dr. designed the DDS1 specifically to play Gilmour parts in a Pink Floyd tribute band. This set, pairing a DDS1 (with the Fat 55 option by default) with two ZV55s in the neck and middle positions, is what he uses in Echoes: The American Pink Floyd. It covers all of the Gilmour tone and output bases. Use Core 1, the vintage output single coil side of the DDS1, for all of the early stuff; Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, etc., and the series combination of Core 1 + Core 2 for Animals, The Wall, Momentary Lapse, Pulse, etc.
